Down payments on a home can range from zero to twenty percent or more, depending on the buyers situation. For buyers wishing to make the smallest downpayment possible, the VA Loan via the Department of Veterans Affairs and the USDA Loan via the U.S. Department of Agriculture both offer no down payment loans. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac offer a Conventional 97% Loan to Value program, wiht 3% down, but there are other Conventional Loan products available with down payments as low as 1% down. For most home buyers, the minimum down payment required is either 3 percent via Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, or 3.5 percent, available with a standard FHA loan.
